Festschrift for Jack D. Ives |
![]() |
Jack D. Ives, the foremost living exponent of mountain geoecology, is eighty years old this year. A Festschrift in his honor is long overdue.
As a mountain enthusiast, you are most likely aware of Jack Ives' contributions in glacial geomorphology, cultural and physical geography, mountain history, and hazard management. Throughout his career, as teacher, primary adviser for 55 doctoral research projects, founder and editor of two major journals, co-author of UNCED's Mountain Agenda, keynote speaker at dozens of international conferences, and reviewer of uncountable research and development projects, Dr. Ives has promoted, shaped, and greatly expanded the field of mountain studies. This is a remarkable legacy that should be noted and feted now, while he can enjoy and participate in the celebration.
Speaking personally, I can say that Jack has been a collaborator and mentor since 2003, when we were both involved in the Namche Conference ("People, Parks and Mountain Ecotourism"). He has served as an adviser and contributor to the journal that I founded and edit, "Himalayan Journal of Sciences." In return, I had the honor of producing and publishing a second edition of his recent monograph, Himalayan Perceptions: Environmental Change and the Well-being of Mountain Peoples, and I can tell you that he was extremely pleased with both the quality and the pricepoint of this project. I can also promise you that the Ives Festschrift will be of equally high quality.
I would like to invite Jack's colleagues, collaborators, former students and friends to submit an essay, either personal or academic, for inclusion in this Festschrift. There will be no formal peer review, but all contributions will be lightly edited for usage, style and consistency. We are suggesting a limit of 3000 to 5000 words, but exceptions will be granted as necessary. Photographs and other images are welcome and will be displayed on our Webfestschrift at this location; a limited number will be included in the published volume itself.
The Ives Festschrift will be published and ready for distribution by December 11, 2012 -- the tenth anniversary of the first International Year of Mountains. Please send us a provisional title and abstract by May 31; full texts must be received by August 31, 2012, preferably sooner.
Do let me know if you have suggestions for funding or collaboration with organizations with which you are associated.
